The Last of Us, BioShock Infinite and Tomb Raider are three of the last year’s best games. What do they all have in common? Simply, they all carry a very serious tone. This is nowhere near a bad thing, but it seemed like the year’s biggest games were more towards the serious side of the spectrum. Personally, I’m a gamer who loves his comedy and I’m here to tell you why we need more games that don’t take themselves so serious.
There’s just a certain charm that games like Octodad: Dadliest Catch have. The feeling of that huge smile from ear to ear while you’re playing a game is an amazing one. Making the player laugh at the dialogue, premise and characters in general is not something that every developer can pull off, but when it is done right, it can be a great thing.
I’ll never forget the first time I played Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. It was the same great combat and controls that I loved from Far Cry 3, but the developers at Ubisoft Montreal were allowed to get as crazy as they want. The people who make these games are absurdly creative and artistic and it is sad that some of them don’t get to do things like this. Blood Dragon shows us what we get when they’re allowed to go balls to the wall crazy.
Coming home after a long day of work or school and playing one of these silly games can be the perfect thing to put you in a great mood. I can’t count the number of times I came home to my apartment after a long day, started up Octodad and my day instantly got better after a few laughs. I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with coming home and playing a grittier game, but the feeling of getting a handful of laughs after a long day is great.
Asking for more silly games is a hard thing to do though, as comedy is very very subjective. For example, I love Tomodachi Life, but it is INCREDIBLY difficult for me to recommend because the humor is so weird and niche.
These games aren’t made for everyone, but when the game play is fun and the developers really try hard on the comedy portion, it really becomes a gem. I love games like BioShock and TLOU just as much as the next guy, but damn would I like some more silly games.
