What Madden Could Learn From NBA 2K

Growing up a football fan and a gamer, I was all over the Madden football games. Whether it was on the Genesis, PlayStation 1, or PlayStation 2, I loved everything that EA was bringing to the virtual gridiron. As of late though, the Madden franchise has slumped and many of its former fans have turned on the franchise completely. Could EA Sports revitalize their franchise by looking at their competitor’s basketball franchise? I sure as hell think so.

Like I said, growing up a football fan meant I spent countless hours playing the different titles in the Madden franchise. The problem was once EA signed their exclusive rights deal with the Nation Football League, their product’s quality drastically declined. It’s hard to tell if it was a lack of caring, a lack of competition,  or exactly what the problem was, but Madden consistently lost its charm and started to feel like EA Sports was just mailing it in.

Is there something that EA Sports that could add tot heir game that could make many gamers interested in their title once again? I believe that they could look to the folks over at 2K Sports and their basketball game NBA 2K14.

In NBA 2K14, there is a game mode called “MyCareer”. In that mode you play as a rookie making his way up to the top in the NBA. You play in a rising starts game, get interviewed and eventually get drafted. Once you’re drafted, you go through cut scenes with teammates, battle back and forth with your rival and even experience special events due to choices you make.

I truly believe that adding a mode like this to Madden would increases its popularity tenfold. I know that there is a “Create A Superstar” mode, but the level of detail in story and events are minuscule  in comparison to NBA 2K14.

Just imagine the fun that would be had if we could play the senior bowl, do the combine, interview with teams, get drafted and interact with teammates at OTA’s. If this was added to a future installment of Madden, I can guarantee you that millions more copies would sell and that many people would fall back in love with the franchise.

I know it’s all wishful thinking, but I would love to see this sort of thing added to a franchise that I once loved so much. I have a blast playing this mode in NBA 2K14 and I would sink hours into it if EA Sports were to add it into the Madden series. Hopefully one day we can enjoy a MyCareer-esque game mode in Madden and hey, if the NFL exclusive deal ever runs out, we may just get a 2K game many fans have been dying for.
