Every year at E3 there’s a game that catches you off so off guard and invigorates your love and intrigue of gaming once again. Whether it be a sequel to a huge franchise, or a brand new IP, it is always nice to see a game that as it’s playing your jaw is on the floor. That game for me this year is Guerrilla Game’s newest IP: Horizon Zero Dawn.
When I was watching Horizon’s demo, I had the biggest grin on my face. Everything about this title is got me so damn excited. The graphics are beautiful, the art style is awesome, the game mechanics are awesome, the female protagonist looks flat out bad ass.
I love when video games are dumb. I mean that in a way certain way though. I love a game that if you imagined it being pitched in a board room, you’d just laugh. This is that type of game.
If you didn’t know, Horizon Zero Dawn is a post-apocalyptic set game, that has civilization reverted to cave people and hunters, while robot dinosaurs roam around. See what I mean? I cannot imagine this game being pitched to upper management and I get a huge smile on my face when I think about it.
Getting back to the game play, Horizon shined like a diamond during its demo. You sneak around and hunt these robot dinosaurs and eventually, this monstrous robot dinosaur came to fight you. You use this bow to fight them that seems to have a bunch of different attachments, and finally pin the beat down to the ground with a special arrow.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a soft spot for games that use a bow and arrow in the them. I love the use of the in Crysis 3, Tomb Raider, and Far Cry 3. There is just something inherently bad ass that appeals to me about sneaking around and lining up your shot on with it.
There’s just something special about this game when you watch it go. It’s nice to see Guerrilla step out of their first person comfort zone and I cannot wait to see the direction this game is going to take.
Yes I fell in love with Fallout 4, and honestly it almost won Game of the Show here at Gaming Tech United (hell I pre-ordered the Pip Boy Edition), but the wonder that Horizon invoked at me just gave it the edge. I give Guerrilla my best wishes on working with this title in future and I hope that we see it sooner than later.
Congrats to Guerrilla Games and Horizon Zero Dawn for winning Gaming Tech United’s Game of the Show award for E3 2015!
